Digging in the Archives

Dr. Pamela Baker developed this learning resource in conjunction with the course History 2111, American History to 1865 in Fall 2006 and Spring 2007. The purpose of this assignment is to integrate primary source materials into the entry level college American History course, which is a required course at University System of Georgia institutions. This learning resource may be reused or adapted for educational use, but please credit the authors.

Digital Library of Georgia

The Digital Library of Georgia is a virtual collection of digitized books, newspapers, images, manuscripts and media with an emphasis on material important to the history and culture of the state of Georgia. Many of the materials are from the special collections of GALILEO member institutions.

Georgia Historic Books

The Georgia Historic Books database contains full-text, fully searchable books related to Georgia's history and culture. Most are from the 19th to early 20th century and focus on Georgia history, biography, and literature. The database will contain approximately 300 selected books when complete. These have been selected using bibliographies on Georgia history and in consultation with historians, librarians, and other experts on the literature and history of Georgia. The focus of the selection favors history, biography, and literature, but other subject areas related to Georgia are also included. The books may deal with Georgia history as a subject, or they may have been important for the cultural and intellectual development of the state.

Georgia Historic Newpapers

The Georgia Historic Newspaper Database is an outgrowth of the Georgia Newspaper Project managed by the University of Georgia Libraries. Since the early 1950s the UGA Libraries have made a systematic effort to identify and obtain copies of every newspaper ever published in Georgia and to preserve these valuable historical resources on microfilm. To date over 15 million pages of newsprint have been microfilmed, including at least one newspaper from every county in Georgia that published a newspaper. The Georgia Newspaper Project is part of the U.S. Newspaper Project and has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Microfilm remains the best format for preservation, and microfilming of Georgia newspapers will continue for the foreseeable future. Digital technology, however, offers many advantages for access. In a digital environment newspapers can be viewed from remote locations by multiple users, and the newspaper texts can be searchable. The goal of the Georgia Historic Newspaper Database is to convert every Georgia newspaper to digital format and to make this resource available free of charge as a searchable text database in GALILEO. For further information on the Georgia Newspaper project and information on purchasing newspapers on microfilm, visit their web site at http://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/index.html

McClung Museum, the Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Tennessee State Museum and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian.
