Digging in the Archives
Instructions for Completing the Assignments
Step 1
- Wednesday, January 25th attend a guided tour of the University Archives located on the third floor of the Simon Schwob Memorial Library (provided by Professor Reagan Grimsley, Head Archivist)
- Learn how an archive functions
Learn about primary sources
Explore a collection of primary sources
Please be aware that students must complete the Research Application and abide by the rules and guidelines of the archives (see attachments).
- All students also will be expected to sign in and out each time that they visit the archives.
Step Two
- Wednesday, January 31st attend a second field trip to the University Archives to choose a primary source document (see approved list of documents attached to this handout) that you plan to investigate for this assignment. Please note that only two students from each course may sign up for a given document—so plan ahead and make your selection early. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Archives on the same day.
- Monday, February 5th submit in class the completed Step Two: Selection of Primary Source handout. Please note that electronic submissions will not be accepted.
Step Three
- Monday, February 19th-Friday, March 2nd conduct two hours of independent research in the CSU Archives on the document selected. Students must sign in and out at the archives to receive credit. Students who fail to complete the two hours of research will be penalized for course absences (up to two) and lose points on the assignment.
- Monday, March 12th, submit in class the completed Step Three: Document Analysis handout and attach the Step Two handout with my comments. Please note that electronic submissions will not be accepted.
Step Four
Wednesday, April 11th submit the completed essay assignment during class. No electronic submissions will be accepted. Remember to follow the guidelines outlined below:
Paper Mechanics
- Essay must be at least 900-1100 words in length.
- Type-written and double-spaced with standard 1” margins and 12 point font.
- Include a cover page with your name, the course, the professor’s name, the date, class meeting time, and essay title. Sample cover page should appear as follows:
John Doe
HIST 2111
Dr. Baker
November 28, 2006
3:00-4:15pm
“From a Soldier’s Perspective: Life on the War Front”
- Pages should be numbered (excluding the cover page).
- Attach Step Three (with my comments) & the turnitin.com report to the back of your essay to eliminate any possible acts of plagiarism (see fuller explanation below).
- Final packet must be stapled (no plastic jackets or paper clips!).
