About the Reading Room

Dedicated in 2003, the Columbus State University Archives houses The Institute for the Study of American Cultures/Joseph B. Mahan, Jr. Research Room. The materials located in the Reading Room cover a wide range of subjects, including Pre-Columbian North America, Native Americans, and Ancient Studies. Items in the collection include monographs, periodicals, and maps. These items are searchable through GIL, the online catalog of Columbus State University. While CSU and ISAC are separate entities, an Advisory Board coordinates donations of materials to the Research Room.

The Institute for the Study of American Cultures is a non-profit entity founded in 1983 in Columbus, Georgia. The purpose of the institute is to coordinate and sponsor a competent, objective, multi-disciplinary investigation of Pre-Columbian and American Indian History. Dr. Joseph B. Mahan was instrumental in founding the group and served as a leader of the organization from 1983 until his death in 1994.
